Our Goal

Blue Planet Foundation's mission is to end the use of fossil fuels on Earth, starting in Hawaii. We can eliminate Hawaii‘s dependency on imported oil by switching to local, clean, renewable sources of energy. The result? Energy security, economic growth, job creation, environmental protection, and a better quality of life for Hawaii residents. Through educational outreach, advancing sound policy, and developing programs that connect island communities with effective solutions, Blue Planet Foundation is fostering Hawaii’s clean energy future. Did you know the ocean absorbs almost one-third of our CO2 emissions? This CO2 absorption is happening at an alarming and unprecedented rate, rapidly changing the ocean's chemistry. As the pH level of the seawater drops and the ocean becomes more acidic, tiny coral polyps struggle to form their shells. Without healthy coral, marine ecosystems are threatened, and the food chain disrupted.

If you have heard Blue Planet Founder Henk Rogers talk about why he wants to eliminate the use of carbon-based fuel, you’ll know that he’s passionate about saving the coral, saving the ocean.

Here’s a slideshow of 10 marine species that are facing extinction because they are struggling to survive in their altered environment.

Read more about ocean acidification:

“How Acidification Threatens Oceans From the Inside Out” by Marah J. Hardt and Carl Safina, Scientific American

“An Ominous Warning about the Effects of Ocean Acidification” by Carl Zimmer, Yale Environment 360

We can do something about ocean acidification. Clean energy = No CO2 pollution. Help protect our ocean.

Mahalo to Laura Sasso and Sandra Johnson for creating this compelling animation to clearly explain what is happening to the sea, and to Makana for letting us use "Napo‘o Kala" as the soundtrack.
