This morning LG Brian Schatz recognized Blue Planet as one of the recipients of the state's Supplemental Environmental Project grants. These grants—totaling some $600,000—will help fund projects in the Wai‘anae community and areas outlying the Waimanalo Gulch landfill. Landfill violation fines were the source of the funds.
Blue Planet is looking forward to working with a diverse range of Wai‘anae organizations to kick off a community-based efficiency program, much like the ones in progress on Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i. There are so many meaningful, under-heralded projects happening in Wai‘anae, and the rest of Hawai‘i would do well to follow their lead. We're honored to have the opportunity to engage a community that is proactively taking responsibility for their future. They're taking care of their own, not waiting for others to do it for them.
