Hui Up Lanai FAQ
What is Hui Up Lanai?
Hui Up is a community-based program powered by Blue Planet Foundation and Laulima Kuha’o in partnership with Hawaii Energy, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, State of Hawaii-Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Servco Home and Appliance Distribution and Castle and Cooke to provide an opportunity for residents of Lanai to become more energy-efficient through an ENERGY STAR appliance trade-in.
How does it work?
The program was designed to provide the Lanai residents an ENERGY STAR Refrigerator at a discounted rate. Due to the collaboration of few key partners, the program is able to provide you a brand new refrigerator at a significantly cheaper price by ordering a container full of refrigerators shipped directly to Kaumalapau harbor. The program alleviates shipping costs, provides wholesale prices and includes rebates to lower the cost. You will be asked to trade-in your old working (in use) refrigerator with a brand new ENERGY STAR refrigerator that will save you money and energy in the future. Your old refrigerator will be hauled away for proper disposal. If you are a renter, you will be asked to keep your new refrigerator at the property address in the event you plan to move out. Based on the savings of $300 or more per year (Estimated calculation), your payback of switching to a brand new ENERGY STAR refrigerator is approximately a year.
What are ENERGY STAR appliances?
ENERGY STAR labeled refrigerators are designed to use more than 20% less energy than models not labeled with ENERGY STAR. If your refrigerator is more than 15 years old, you could be saving up to $500 a year due to less energy used.
Why is saving energy important?
More than 90% of Hawaii’s energy comes from imported oil. Generating power from oil pollutes the atmosphere with carbon emissions. ENERGY STAR appliances, not only saves you energy and money but also helps to reduce our impact on the environment.
Why do we need to trade-in our old (in-use) refrigerator?
Upon signing the Hui Up Lanai agreement, you will be asked to trade-in your old (in use) refrigerator with a brand new ENERGY STAR refrigerator. The idea is to reduce our energy consumption so you that you will pay less energy bill each month. The program offers this special deal only to qualified applicants with an old (in use) refrigerator that are ready to be traded-in. Since you are hauling away the old for a brand new ENERGY STAR refrigerator, if you are a renter, you will be asked to keep your new refrigerator at the property address, in the event you decide to move out of the property. Your average payback for the refrigerator is estimated at 12 months based on an average savings of $300.00 a year. (The brand new model uses only 335kwh/year)
How long will it take to receive my brand new refrigerator?
It will take approximately 4 weeks for your refrigerator to arrive at Kaumalapau Harbor once the order is placed. You will be notified once we have an exact date of arrival.
Where can we dispose of the old refrigerator?
As part of the Hui Up Lanai program, your old (in use) refrigerator will be hauled away responsibly by a Participating Disposal Company. You will be required to trade-in your old (in use) refrigerator at the time of exchange.
How does the claim and service work?
If you have any problems or issues with the refrigerator, you could contact a service representative at 1-800-GECARES (432-2737). Your warranty will be recorded the day you receive your refrigerator. Blue Planet will issue you a receipt that provides you with a product receiving date.
How does installation work?
The Hui Up Lanai program is designed to provide you the ENERGY STAR refrigerator only at an affordable cost. It does not include installation fee.
Why does the rebate go to Blue Planet Foundation?
Since rebates take about 12-14 weeks to process, Blue Planet Foundation (a non-profit organization) is fronting the entire cost and your rebate to avoid unnecessary upfront cost to you. You will be asked to sign the rebate form releasing your rebate to the Blue Planet Foundation.
