In Hawai‘i, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) plays a critical role in shaping the energy landscape. This takes the form of (1) PUC decisions on specific energy proposals; (2) rules that increase equity and access to renewable energy, like community solar; (3) incentives for utilities and other energy industry players to better align with customer and societal benefits, such as performance-based regulation (PBR); and (4) long-term energy and grid planning. Blue Planet has a long history of influencing the PUC process in furtherance of our clean energy and climate goals by being at the table when key decisions are made.
In addition to shaping specific policies and decisions, our regulatory work provides other benefits. By working with experts and influencing major energy decisions, we enhance our credibility and reputation. This work positions us to serve as a first-choice source for media covering energy issues and allows us to strengthen relationships with the network of energy through regulation.
