In 2016, hundreds of smart residents took the challenge to find the energy monsters lurking in their homes. By making the invisible, visible, we empowered more than 750 homes to take control of their energy choices, lowering their electricity bills and their carbon footprint.
In 2016, Blue Planet Foundation partnered with Hawaiian Electric and Bidgely, an Energy Excelerator portfolio company, to install free home energy monitoring kits in more than 750 homes on Oahu. The program, also sponsored in part by Ulupono Initiative, empowered those participating in the exclusive pilot to see how much energy their homes use and how to save money on their electricity bills through personalized tips and tricks.
The kits worked hand in hand with Bidgely’s HomeBeat software, which shows how much energy major appliances are using in a home and approximately how much money those appliances cost on a monthly basis. Participants also had the opportunity to take part in fun energy challenges—we sent real-time alerts letting them know how to do their part by reducing their total energy usage at times when the island needs it the most.
