Our Accomplishments
Blue Planet has contributed significantly to the establishment of progressive clean energy policies at the legislature and the Public Utilities Commission, including one of the nation’s first carbon taxes (Act 73 of 2010), one of the nation’s first feed-in tariffs, and the planning for an on-bill financing program.
Working with school and community groups statewide, Blue Planet has implemented highly successful energy efficiency projects. Our C.F.L. program has replaced nearly 300,000 incandescent light bulbs with CFLS, saving residents more than $40 million and displacing 190,000 barrels of oil over the lifetime of the bulbs.
Blue Planet has grown a network of 14,000 “Friends of Blue Planet” who support our efforts to advance Hawaii’s clean energy future.
Blue Planet helped procure $250,000 in USDA grants to help rural businesses fund small-scale renewable energy projects.
Through a partnership with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Blue Planet has helped foster increased adoption of solar on Hawaiian Homesteads. The Native Hawaiian Economic Alliance presented Blue Planet with the 2010 Native Hawaiian Community Champion award.
For its outstanding contributions toward Hawaii’s clean energy goals, Blue Planet received commendation from the Hawaii State House and the Hawaii State Senate in 2011.
Blue Planet has reached tens of thousands of Hawai‘i residents directly through compelling presentations, tabling events, and community outreach efforts.
Our Goal
Blue Planet Foundation is a Honolulu-based nonprofit committed to ending Hawaii's dependency on oil, creating a model of energy self-sufficiency for ending the use fossil fuels on Earth. By switching to local, clean, renewable sources of energy, we can achieve energy security, economic growth, job creation, environmental protection, and a better quality of life for Hawaii residents.
Through educational outreach, advancing bold policy, and developing programs that connect island communities with effective solutions, Blue Planet Foundation is moving Hawaii beyond oil—toward a future powered by clean energy.
